Details: Nalo Hopkinson is a Jamaican-born writer and editor who lives in Canada. Her science fiction and fantasy novels often draw on Caribbean history and language, and its traditions of oral and written storytelling. Hopkinson is the recipient of the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer and the Ontario Arts Council Foundation Award for Emerging Writers. Brown Girl in the Ring was nominated for the Philip K. Dick Award in 1998, and received the Locus Award for Best New Writer. Skin Folk received the World Fantasy Award and the Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic in 2003. The Salt Roads received the Gaylactic Spectrum Award for positive exploration of queer issues in speculative fiction for 2004, presented at the 2005 Gaylaxicon. In 2008, The New Moon's Arms received the Aurora Award (Canada's reader-voted award for science fiction and fantasy) and the Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic, making her the first author to receive the Sunburst Award twice.

Details: Anthony Rowe is an artist, researcher and founder member of experimental digital arts group Squidsoup.
Squidsoup combine sound, physical space and virtual worlds to produce immersive and emotive headspaces. They explore the modes and effects of interactivity, looking to make digital experiences where meaningful and creative interaction can occur. Above all, they aim to allow participants to take active control of these experiences.
Their work has been shown at several dozen festivals, seminars and galleries around the world including Late at Tate Britain, several Future of Sound events, Futuresonic, ISEA, Sonar, SIGGRAPH and, most recently, Late at the V&A.
Anthony will be showing and discussing several Squidsoup projects, and framing them into a narrative that leads to his current research into interaction and visualization techniques in three physical dimensions.

'From Early Years through to University the goals and definitions of what it means to be Educated have been redefined. At the heart of govenment policy is the relationship betwen the economic imperative and the kinds of curriculum and courses that have saturated the educational landscape.
When the former Department for Education was divided into the Department For Children, Schools and Families ( DCSF) and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) the word 'education' ws omitted and this signals a new direction in government thinking'.
